The problem Bitcoin entered

Case background · documents: publications 1982–2005 later cited by the author · not part of the corpus

The email’s first sentence is matter-of-fact because the author was writing to people who knew the context. To understand what was new in this proposal, one has to know what was old. Electronic cash was not a 2008 idea. Work on it had been going since the 1980s, and system after system failed — not because the cryptography broke, but because each had a centre: an issuer, a company, a server. A centre can be shut down, and centres were shut down. Alongside them existed partial solutions: proof-of-work as a defence against abuse, proposals for money without an issuer, timestamps binding documents into a chain. The pieces had been on the table for years. One problem remained unsolved: how, without a trusted third party, to establish which of two conflicting transactions came first.

1980s–90s: e-cash systems with a central issuer proof-of-work as a defence mechanism against abuse proposals for money without an issuer, remaining on paper timestamps binding documents into a chain unsolved: double spending without a trusted third party
This background will let us separate, in the blocks to come, what the author borrowed from what he added himself. For now we attribute to him no knowledge of any of these works — we will check that in the whitepaper’s bibliography, document by document.
